Bonding is the bonding of atoms in short. There are 3 types of bonding Metallic, Ionic, and Covalent. But for now let’s look at the overview of bonding. Bonding is when you take two atoms and combine them so they are both stable. A stable atom is an atom with 8 valence electrons. Valence electrons are the amount of electrons in an atoms outer shell. For instance this atom has 2 valence electrons. Because this outer shell is full it is the stable atom known as Helium. There can be up to 4 shells in an atom. The first shell is full with 2 electrons, the second with 8, 16, and 36 in the last shell. It is very rare that there is a 5th shell so we won’t go there today. Now let’s look at an example, lets bond Sodium (Na+) and Chlorine (Cl-) to get what we all know as salt or known as sodium chloride. As shown in the picture below. Sodium and Chlorine are unstable because Na+ has one electron in its outer shell and Cl- has only 7 and needs 1 more. Na+ gives up its 1 outer electron giving it a full 2nd shelAtom.pngl and gives it to Cl- which gives it a full shell. There are so many different bonds that could be or have already been done. but there are also stuff that has not been done

Metallic bonding

Metallic bonding is one of the three types of bonding. This one is different because if involves the bonding of only metals. If you look the periodic table below you can see that most of the elements are metals. When two types of metals bond that is known as metallic bonding. Now let’s look at an example of metallic bonding. For this example where going to be looking periodic_table.gifat a little more complex one. Sodium and Magnesium will be bonded. If you look at the diagram below the Periodic Table you might think to yourself how are we going to bond that well where going to do something that most people wouldn’t think of doing. Where going to take 7 magnesium atoms to make this one happy. With our 7 magnesium atoms where going to attach the one of the electrons from the magnesium atoms to the outer shell of the sodium atom making sodium a stable atom while magnesium stays stable so both are happy.

Ionic Bonding


Ionic Bonding is the second type of bonding; it is just like the others it involves any type of bonding between metals and gasses. This is different because if you bond a metal and a gas it is known as Ionic bonding because of this we won’t go into Ionic bonding too much. There is one thing that I will mention is that the last column of the Periodic table is known as the noble gases. One, they are all gases, two, they are all stable they all have a full last shell so you will never see any of those gases bonding with any other elements.








Covalent Bonding

Last but not least we have Covalent Bonding covalent bonding is covalent bonding is you guessed it the bonding of gasses. The bonding of gasses is just like the bonding of metals but is the bonding of gasses. If you look back at the periodic table there aren’t as many gasses on the periodic table as metals but there are still many different ways of bonding gasses. Let’s look at an example of a covalent bond. The picture kind of speaks for its self but to bond oxygen and fluorine you need 2 fluorine atoms you need both fluorine atoms to give up one atom to the oxygen atom and there you go you have 3 happy atoms.
